What we do

Every service, every job —
done properly.

Manufacturer-spec intervals, dealer-level diagnostics and OEM-grade parts. Every service is quoted in writing against your VIN before work begins, with a clear, line-itemised breakdown.

  • 01

    Pre-tune vehicle assessment

Full ISTA scan across every module, service history review, fluid and plug condition, cooling-system and charge-pipe inspection, plus baseline data logs. Nothing is calibrated on a car with an unresolved fault.

  • 02

    ECU unlock coordination

Later S58 vehicles use a locked ECU, so a flash pathway requires an unlock step. We confirm what your specific ECU and model year needs and coordinate the process before any calibration is scheduled.

  • 03

    Engine calibration (S58)

Flash calibration on supported platforms, with fuel type, hardware and intended use accounted for. Knock margin, boost control and thermal behaviour reviewed in data logs, and a stock file retained.

  • 04

    Transmission calibration

Where supported, DCT and ZF 8HP calibration for shift firmness, clamping and shift logic. This is separate from engine calibration and not always required.

  • 05

    Intake upgrades

Intake systems installed and accounted for in the calibration, with fitment, sealing and intake air temperature behaviour verified afterwards.

  • 06

    Exhaust & downpipes

Downpipe and exhaust hardware fitted, with the calibration adjusted for the change in flow and any emissions-related considerations discussed before work is booked.

  • 07

    Spark plugs & supporting hardware

Plugs, cooling upgrades, charge pipes and fuelling-related hardware reviewed as part of the package rather than added afterwards.

  • 08

    Data logging & verification

Logs before and after, road tested, with external dyno verification arranged where the work calls for it.

  • 09

    Servicing alongside calibration

Scheduled servicing, transmission fluid, brake fluid and mechanical repairs carried out in the same workshop that holds your calibration file.

Why Apex

Dealer-grade work.
Without the dealer wait-list.

  • 01

    S58 platform experience

G80 M3, G82/G83 M4 and G87 M2 are regular work here — the same technicians handle the assessment, the hardware and the calibration.

  • 02

    Assessment before calibration

The vehicle is scanned, inspected and logged first. If something needs attention before a tune, we say so rather than flashing over it.

  • 03

    Whole-combination approach

Model year, transmission, ECU status, fuel, existing modifications and intended use are reviewed together before a package is recommended.

  • 04

    Honest about warranty

A flash calibration is detectable by BMW and affects the powertrain portion of manufacturer warranty. We explain that clearly before anything is tuned.

  • 05

    External dyno access

No in-house dyno. Dyno testing is arranged through trusted external facilities where it is genuinely required for calibration or verification.

  • 06

    Documented and quoted in writing

Written, line-itemised quote against your VIN, data logs retained, and photo or video evidence of relevant findings.

Deep dive

BMW G80 M3 tuning in Melbourne

Apex Performance Tuning provides performance preparation and tuning solutions for BMW G80 M3 and related G8X S58 vehicles from its Wantirna South workshop.

The appropriate tuning pathway depends on the vehicle's model year, transmission, ECU status, fuel, existing modifications and intended use. Available work may include vehicle assessment, ECU-unlock coordination, engine and transmission calibration, intake and exhaust upgrades, spark plugs and supporting hardware.

Apex reviews the complete vehicle combination before confirming a recommended package. Apex has access to external dyno facilities, arranged where required for testing and calibration work.

Apex is an independent performance workshop and is not affiliated with or authorised by BMW.

The packages — stock, stage 1 or stage 2

It is the most common G80 question we get. BMW's factory Competition calibration sits at a published 375 kW and 650 Nm, and the CS and CSL variants step higher from the factory — but every factory file is written to survive global fuel quality, emissions rules and warranty margins. That conservatism is why the S58 responds so well to calibration, and it is also why there is no single right answer.

Which package suits your car comes down to ECU status, fuel, transmission and how the car is used. We would rather talk you out of the wrong step than sell you the biggest one — so every pathway is assessed on the car and quoted in writing before anything is booked.

  • Stock — leave it as it is

The factory S58 is already excellent. If warranty coverage matters most, or the car is doing family duty, stock is a legitimate answer and we will say so.

  • Stage 1 — calibration only

ECU calibration on stock hardware — with the ECU unlock handled first on locked cars — written for the fuel you actually run and verified in data logs. Nothing mechanical changes on a healthy car. Optional transmission calibration on automatic cars sharpens shifts and clamping. The result is a stronger mid-range and power that holds to redline.

  • Stage 2 — hardware and calibration together

Downpipes and intake fitted, with supporting plug and cooling work where the car's use calls for it, and a calibration written for that exact combination. Dyno verification is arranged externally by arrangement where the work calls for it. This is where the powerband is genuinely reshaped, not just lifted — and the hardware list is decided on your car, not from a catalogue.

The S58 vehicles we calibrate

The S58 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six is shared across the current M range, so the same calibration and hardware knowledge applies across these vehicles, with differences in transmission, cooling and ECU status handled per car.

  • G80 M3 & M3 Competition

Six-speed manual on non-Competition cars and ZF 8HP M Steptronic on Competition, rear-wheel drive and xDrive. Transmission type changes what calibration work is available.

  • G81 M3 Touring

Competition xDrive drivetrain — the same S58 calibration approach as the G80 Competition.

  • G82 / G83 M4

Coupe and convertible, manual and ZF 8HP, rear-wheel drive and xDrive.

  • G87 M2

S58 in a shorter platform, manual or ZF 8HP. Cooling and intake behaviour are worth logging closely on track-used cars.

  • G20 M340i & related B58 cars

Not S58, but frequently asked about alongside it. Calibration is available on suitable B58 vehicles and assessed the same way.

ECU unlock, engine calibration and transmission calibration

These are three separate things and owners often use them interchangeably. An ECU unlock is the access step required on later locked S58 control units before a flash calibration can be written. It changes nothing about how the car drives on its own.

Engine calibration is the change to boost, fuelling, ignition and torque limiting that produces the performance difference, written for the fuel you actually use and the hardware fitted. Transmission calibration is a separate file affecting shift speed, firmness and clamping pressure on ZF 8HP cars; it is optional and is not relevant to manual vehicles.

We confirm which of these your car needs — and which it does not — before anything is quoted, because model year and ECU status determine what is genuinely available.

Supporting hardware and how we decide what is required

Hardware requirements depend on how far the calibration goes and how the car is used. A conservative calibration on a healthy stock G80 typically needs nothing beyond correct-condition plugs and fluids. Higher targets, E-blend fuel, sustained track use or hot-weather running bring intake, cooling, charge-pipe and plug considerations into the conversation.

Rather than sell a fixed package list, we assess the car: scan every module, review service history, inspect the cooling system and charge pipes, log a baseline, and then recommend the combination that suits your intended use. Anything additional is quoted in writing against your VIN and approved before it happens.

Questions

Common questions,
straight answers.

Where can I tune a BMW G80 M3 in Melbourne?+

At Apex Performance Tuning, Unit 4/6 Woodbine Court, Wantirna South VIC 3152 — an independent performance workshop calibrating G8X S58 vehicles for owners across Melbourne's eastern and south-eastern suburbs. Open Monday to Friday 8:30am–5:30pm, call 0483 939 216.

Does a G80 M3 require an ECU unlock?+

It depends on the model year and ECU status. Later S58 control units are locked and require an unlock step before a flash calibration can be written; earlier vehicles may not. We confirm what your specific car needs from the VIN before quoting.

What is the difference between ECU and transmission tuning?+

ECU (engine) calibration changes boost, fuelling, ignition and torque limiting, which is what produces the performance difference. Transmission calibration is a separate file affecting shift speed, firmness and clamping pressure on ZF 8HP vehicles. They are quoted separately, and transmission calibration does not apply to manual cars.

What supporting modifications may be required?+

It depends on the calibration target, fuel and intended use. A conservative calibration on a healthy stock car typically needs only correct-condition plugs and fluids. Higher targets, E-blend fuel or sustained track use bring intake, cooling, charge-pipe and spark-plug considerations in, which we assess on the vehicle before recommending anything.

Can Apex tune manual and automatic G80 M3 vehicles?+

Yes. Engine calibration is available on suitable manual and ZF 8HP M Steptronic vehicles. Transmission calibration applies only to the ZF 8HP cars.

Should I leave my G80 stock, do a stage 1, or go to stage 2?+

It depends on your ECU status, the fuel you want to run, how much hardware you are prepared to fit and how the car is used. Stock is a legitimate answer if warranty coverage matters most. A conservative stage 1 calibration suits most owners — no hardware changes on a healthy car, verified in data logs. Stage 2 combines hardware (typically downpipes and intake) with a calibration written for that exact combination. We assess the car and quote the pathway in writing before anything is booked.

Is dyno testing available?+

Apex does not have an in-house dyno. Dyno testing can be arranged through trusted external dyno facilities where it is required for calibration or verification work, by prior arrangement.

What information is needed before recommending a tuning package?+

Model year and VIN, transmission type, current ECU status, any existing modifications, the fuel you intend to run and how the car is used. We then scan the vehicle, inspect it and log a baseline before confirming a recommended package in writing.

Will tuning affect my BMW warranty?+

A flash calibration is detectable by BMW and will affect the powertrain portion of manufacturer warranty. Some platforms allow returning the vehicle to a stock file before a dealer visit. We explain the position honestly before any calibration is carried out.

Is Apex a BMW dealership?+

No. Apex Performance Tuning is an independent performance workshop in Wantirna South and is not affiliated with or authorised by BMW.

Can you service my G80 as well as tune it?+

Yes. Scheduled servicing, transmission and brake fluid, plugs and mechanical repairs are carried out in the same workshop, documented with photo or video evidence, a completed inspection sheet and an itemised invoice.

Where are you located?+

Unit 4/6 Woodbine Court, Wantirna South VIC 3152 — easy from EastLink, the M1 and Melbourne's eastern suburbs. Call 0483 939 216 to book.
