What we do

Every service, every job —
done properly.

Manufacturer-spec intervals, dealer-level diagnostics and OEM-grade parts. Every service is quoted in writing against your VIN before work begins, with a clear, line-itemised breakdown.

  • 01

    Pre-tune health check

Full ISTA scan across every module, service history review, plug and fluid condition, cooling system, charge pipes and boost-control components inspected before anything is written.

  • 02

    Engine calibration

Flash calibration on supported platforms, written for your fuel, hardware and intended use, with knock margin, boost control and thermal behaviour checked in data logs.

  • 03

    ECU unlock coordination

Later S58 and some B58 control units are locked. We confirm what your model year and ECU status require and coordinate the unlock step where one exists.

  • 04

    Transmission calibration

ZF 8HP and DCT calibration where supported, covering shift speed, firmness and clamping pressure. A separate file to engine calibration.

  • 05

    Intake, exhaust & downpipes

Hardware fitted and accounted for in the calibration, with fitment, sealing and post-fitment behaviour verified on the road.

  • 06

    Cooling & charge-pipe upgrades

Heat is the limiter on most modern turbocharged BMWs. Cooling, charge pipes and plugs reviewed as part of the package.

  • 07

    Fuelling & plugs

Plug heat range and condition, fuel-system capability and fuel quality reviewed before targets are set — especially on E-blend builds.

  • 08

    Data logging & verification

Logs before and after, road tested, with external dyno verification arranged where the work genuinely calls for it.

Why Apex

Dealer-grade work.
Without the dealer wait-list.

  • 01

    Modern and older BMW platforms

From N54 and N55 through B48, B58, S55 and S58 — the same workshop services them, repairs them and calibrates them.

  • 02

    Assessment before calibration

Scanned, inspected and logged first. Faults get resolved before a file is written, not flashed over.

  • 03

    Whole-combination approach

Model year, transmission, ECU status, fuel, existing modifications and intended use reviewed together before a package is recommended.

  • 04

    Honest about warranty

A flash calibration is detectable by BMW and affects the powertrain portion of manufacturer warranty. We explain that clearly before anything is tuned.

  • 05

    External dyno access

No in-house dyno. Dyno testing arranged through trusted external facilities where it is genuinely required for calibration or verification.

  • 06

    Documented and quoted in writing

Written, line-itemised quote against your VIN, logs retained, and photo or video evidence of relevant findings.

Deep dive

Independent BMW tuning in Melbourne

Apex Performance Tuning provides BMW calibration and performance hardware work from its Wantirna South workshop for owners across Melbourne's eastern and south-eastern suburbs.

What is available depends on the engine family, model year, transmission and ECU status. Some platforms have mature, well-understood calibration pathways; others require an unlock step first; a few need hardware attention before a calibration is sensible at all. We confirm the position for your specific vehicle from the VIN rather than quoting a generic stage.

Apex is an independent workshop and is not affiliated with or authorised by BMW.

BMW engine families we calibrate

These are the families we work with most often. Each has its own known limits, failure points and sensible targets, which is why the assessment comes before the quote.

  • N54 3.0 twin-turbo

135i, 335i, 1M, Z4 35i. Mature tuning platform. Fuel pump, injector and charge-pipe condition decide what is realistic.

  • N55 / N20 / N26

335i, 435i, M235i, 328i, X-models. Single-turbo platforms where cooling and charge-pipe condition matter as much as the file.

  • B48 / B38

Modern four-cylinder and three-cylinder turbo cars. Sensible gains with an emphasis on drivability and thermal margin.

  • B58 3.0 turbo

M140i, M240i, M340i, M440i, 540i, Z4 M40i, Supra. Strong response to calibration; unlock requirements vary by model year.

  • S55 3.0 twin-turbo

    F80 M3, F82 M4, F87 M2 Competition. Well-known platform with a clear hardware progression.

  • S58 3.0 twin-turbo

G80 M3, G81 Touring, G82/G83 M4, G87 M2, X3M/X4M. Locked control units on later cars require an unlock step first.

Stage language, and what it actually means

Owners usually arrive asking for a stage. It is a useful shorthand, but it describes hardware rather than a guaranteed outcome: a first-step calibration assumes healthy stock hardware, later steps assume a downpipe, intake, cooling or fuelling changes.

What actually decides the result is your fuel, the health of the engine, ambient temperature and how the car is used. Two identical cars on different fuel do not get the same file, and a car with a tired plug set or a failing charge pipe should be fixed before it is calibrated.

So we quote the work, not a badge: assessment, the calibration your car can genuinely support, and any hardware that is required to get there — each line itemised in writing against the VIN.

Questions

Common questions,
straight answers.

Where can I get my BMW tuned in Melbourne?+

At Apex Performance Tuning, Unit 4/6 Woodbine Court, Wantirna South VIC 3152 — an independent performance workshop calibrating BMW platforms for owners across Melbourne's eastern and south-eastern suburbs. Open Monday to Friday 8:30am–5:30pm, call 0483 939 216.

Which BMW engines can Apex calibrate?+

N54, N55, N20, N26, B38, B48, B58, S55 and S58 vehicles are the families we work with most often. Availability depends on model year, ECU status and transmission, which we confirm from your VIN before quoting.

Do I need an ECU unlock?+

It depends on the platform and model year. Later S58 and some B58 control units are locked and require an unlock step before a flash calibration can be written. Earlier cars generally do not.

Is a tune safe for my BMW?+

A conservative calibration on a mechanically healthy car, written for the fuel you actually run, is a well-understood change. The risk comes from tuning a car with existing faults, tired plugs, failing cooling or unrealistic targets — which is why we assess and log first.

Do you tune diesels?+

Diesel calibration is assessed case by case. Emissions equipment must remain intact and functional, and we will say no where a request is not legal or not sensible for the vehicle.

Can you tune the transmission too?+

On supported ZF 8HP and DCT vehicles, yes. Transmission calibration covers shift speed, firmness and clamping pressure and is quoted separately from engine calibration.

What information do you need before quoting?+

Model, year and VIN, transmission type, ECU status, existing modifications, the fuel you intend to run and how the car is used. We then scan, inspect and log the vehicle before confirming a written package.

Can you service my BMW as well?+

Yes. Scheduled servicing, diagnostics, transmission and brake fluid, cooling repairs and mechanical work are all carried out in the same workshop that holds your calibration file.

Is dyno testing available?+

Apex does not have an in-house dyno. Dyno testing can be arranged through trusted external dyno facilities where it is required for calibration or verification work, by prior arrangement.

Will tuning affect my BMW warranty?+

A flash calibration is detectable by BMW and will affect the powertrain portion of manufacturer warranty. Some platforms allow returning the vehicle to a stock file before a dealer visit. We explain the position honestly before any calibration is carried out.

Is Apex a BMW dealership?+

No. Apex Performance Tuning is an independent workshop at Unit 4/6 Woodbine Court, Wantirna South VIC 3152 and is not affiliated with or authorised by BMW.

Where are you located?+

Unit 4/6 Woodbine Court, Wantirna South VIC 3152 — easy from EastLink, the M1 and Melbourne's eastern suburbs. Open Monday to Friday 8:30am–5:30pm. Call 0483 939 216 to book.
