What we do

Every service, every job —
done properly.

Manufacturer-spec intervals, dealer-level diagnostics and OEM-grade parts. Every service is quoted in writing against your VIN before work begins, with a clear, line-itemised breakdown.

  • 01

    Pre-tune assessment

Full ISTA scan across every module, service history review, plug and fluid condition, charge pipes and cooling system inspected, plus baseline logs before anything is written.

  • 02

    ECU unlock coordination

Later S58 control units are locked and need an unlock step before a flash pathway exists. We confirm what your model year and ECU status actually require.

  • 03

    S58 engine calibration

Boost, fuelling, ignition and torque limiting written for the fuel you run and the hardware fitted, with knock margin and thermal behaviour reviewed in logs and the stock file retained.

  • 04

    ZF 8HP transmission calibration

Separate from engine calibration — shift speed, firmness and clamping pressure on M Steptronic cars. Not applicable to manual G82s.

  • 05

    Intake systems

Intake hardware fitted and accounted for in the calibration, with sealing and intake air temperature behaviour verified on the road afterwards.

  • 06

    Downpipes & exhaust

Exhaust hardware fitted with the calibration adjusted for the change in flow, and emissions-related considerations discussed before the work is booked.

  • 07

    Cooling & charge-pipe hardware

Convertible G83s and track-used coupes hold more heat. Cooling, charge pipes and plugs are reviewed as part of the package, not bolted on afterwards.

  • 08

    Servicing alongside calibration

Scheduled servicing, transmission and brake fluid and mechanical repairs carried out in the same workshop that holds your calibration file.

Why Apex

Dealer-grade work.
Without the dealer wait-list.

  • 01

    G8X platform work weekly

G80 M3, G81 Touring, G82/G83 M4 and G87 M2 are regular work here — the same technicians handle assessment, hardware and calibration.

  • 02

    Coupe and convertible treated differently

G83 weight, cooling behaviour and roof-module considerations are accounted for rather than treated as a G82 with a different roof.

  • 03

    Assessment before calibration

Scanned, inspected and logged first. If something needs attention before a tune, we say so rather than flashing over it.

  • 04

    Honest about warranty

A flash calibration is detectable by BMW and affects the powertrain portion of manufacturer warranty. We say so before anything is written.

  • 05

    External dyno access

No in-house dyno. Dyno testing arranged through trusted external facilities where the work genuinely calls for it.

  • 06

    Documented and quoted in writing

Written, line-itemised quote against your VIN, logs retained, and photo or video evidence of relevant findings.

Deep dive

BMW G82 M4 tuning in Melbourne

Apex Performance Tuning provides performance preparation and calibration for BMW G82 M4 and G83 M4 Convertible vehicles from its Wantirna South workshop.

The appropriate pathway depends on the vehicle's model year, transmission, ECU status, fuel, existing modifications and intended use. Work may include vehicle assessment, ECU-unlock coordination, engine and transmission calibration, intake and exhaust hardware, spark plugs and cooling-related supporting parts.

We review the complete combination before confirming a recommended package, and we retain the stock file so the vehicle can be returned to standard calibration where that is required.

The packages — stock, stage 1 or stage 2

BMW's factory Competition calibration is deliberately conservative. Published figures sit at 375 kW and 650 Nm for Competition cars, with the CS and CSL variants stepping higher from the factory. Every one of those files is written to survive global fuel quality, emissions rules and warranty margins — which is exactly why the S58 has a reputation for responding so well to calibration.

In practice there are three sensible places to land. The correct answer for your car depends on model year, ECU status, transmission, fuel and how the car is actually used — which is why we assess the car and quote the pathway in writing before anything is booked, rather than selling a stage number off a list. Every package below is quoted with the vehicle.

  • Stock — leave it as it is

The factory S58 is already a genuinely fast, well-mannered engine. For owners who want full warranty coverage and nothing to explain, stock is a legitimate answer and we will say so to your face.

  • Stage 1 — calibration only

ECU calibration on completely stock hardware, written for the fuel you actually run and verified in data logs. On cars with a locked ECU, the unlock is handled first. Nothing mechanical changes on a healthy car. Optional transmission calibration on ZF 8HP cars sharpens shift speed and clamping. The difference is a stronger mid-range and power that holds to redline instead of tapering — without changing the car's character.

  • Stage 2 — hardware and calibration together

Downpipes and intake fitted, with supporting plug and cooling work where the car's use calls for it, and a calibration written for that exact combination. Optional transmission calibration and, where the work justifies it, verification at an external dyno facility by arrangement. This is where the powerband is genuinely reshaped rather than simply lifted. The hardware list is decided on your car, not from a catalogue.

The M4 variants we calibrate

All current M4s share the S58 3.0-litre twin-turbocharged inline-six, but transmission, drivetrain and cooling differences change what calibration work applies to your car.

  • G82 M4 (six-speed manual)

Engine calibration only — there is no transmission file. Clutch condition and plug condition matter more on a manual car that sees launch use.

  • G82 M4 Competition (ZF 8HP)

Engine calibration plus optional transmission calibration for shift speed, firmness and clamping pressure.

  • G82 M4 Competition xDrive

Same engine approach, with traction behaviour and drivetrain loading considered when setting torque targets.

  • G83 M4 Convertible

Heavier, retains more heat with the roof up. Cooling and intake air temperature behaviour are worth logging closely before committing to an aggressive target.

  • G82 M4 CSL and track-used cars

Assessed individually. Cars that see sustained track use are reviewed for cooling, fluid and plug condition before any calibration discussion.

What determines the pathway on your specific M4

Model year and ECU status decide whether an unlock step is required before a flash calibration can be written. Transmission type decides whether a transmission file is even relevant. Fuel decides how much timing and boost is sensible — a calibration written for 98 RON is not the same file as one written for an E-blend.

Existing modifications matter as much as the target. A downpipe, an intake or a charge pipe changes flow and heat behaviour, and a calibration that ignores them is guesswork. We log the car first, confirm what is fitted, and write for the combination in front of us.

Intended use is the last input. A daily-driven M4 that occasionally sees a spirited drive and a car doing repeat track sessions in February heat are not the same brief, and they should not get the same file.

Questions

Common questions,
straight answers.

Where can I tune a BMW G82 M4 in Melbourne?+

At Apex Performance Tuning, Unit 4/6 Woodbine Court, Wantirna South VIC 3152 — an independent performance workshop calibrating G8X S58 vehicles for owners across Melbourne's eastern and south-eastern suburbs. Open Monday to Friday 8:30am–5:30pm, call 0483 939 216.

Does a G82 M4 need an ECU unlock before tuning?+

It depends on model year and ECU status. Later S58 control units are locked and require an unlock step before a flash calibration can be written; earlier vehicles may not. We confirm what your specific car needs from the VIN before quoting anything.

Can you tune a manual M4?+

Yes. Engine calibration is available on suitable manual vehicles. Transmission calibration only applies to ZF 8HP M Steptronic cars, so a manual M4 is an engine-calibration job only.

Is the G83 M4 Convertible treated differently?+

Yes. The convertible is heavier and retains more heat with the roof up, so we pay closer attention to intake air temperatures and cooling behaviour in the logs before settling on a target.

What supporting hardware might my M4 need?+

It depends on the target, fuel and use. A conservative calibration on a healthy stock car usually needs nothing beyond correct-condition plugs and fluids. Higher targets, E-blend fuel or sustained track use bring intake, cooling, charge-pipe and plug considerations into the conversation, which we assess on the car.

Can transmission calibration be done on its own?+

Yes, on suitable ZF 8HP vehicles. Some owners want sharper shift behaviour without an engine calibration, and that is a separate file quoted separately.

What information do you need before quoting?+

Model year and VIN, transmission type, current ECU status, existing modifications, the fuel you intend to run and how the car is used. We then scan, inspect and log the vehicle before confirming a package in writing.

Can you service the car as well as tune it?+

Yes. Scheduled servicing, transmission and brake fluid, plugs and mechanical repairs are carried out in the same workshop, documented with photo or video evidence, a completed inspection sheet and an itemised invoice.

Is dyno testing available?+

Apex does not have an in-house dyno. Dyno testing can be arranged through trusted external dyno facilities where it is required for calibration or verification work, by prior arrangement.

Will tuning affect my BMW warranty?+

A flash calibration is detectable by BMW and will affect the powertrain portion of manufacturer warranty. Some platforms allow returning the vehicle to a stock file before a dealer visit. We explain the position honestly before any calibration is carried out.

Is Apex a BMW dealership?+

No. Apex Performance Tuning is an independent workshop at Unit 4/6 Woodbine Court, Wantirna South VIC 3152 and is not affiliated with or authorised by BMW.

Where are you located?+

Unit 4/6 Woodbine Court, Wantirna South VIC 3152 — easy from EastLink, the M1 and Melbourne's eastern suburbs. Open Monday to Friday 8:30am–5:30pm. Call 0483 939 216 to book.
