Quick answer

Apex Performance Tuning carries out independent Volkswagen pre-purchase inspections at Unit 4/6 Woodbine Court, Wantirna South VIC 3152. We are an independent Volkswagen specialist workshop, not a dealership, and we have no interest in whether the sale goes ahead.

Each inspection includes an on-hoist mechanical inspection, a full module scan on VAG ODIS and VCDS, borescope inspection where the engine warrants it, a road test under load, and a photographed written report emailed the same business day.

The inspection is quoted in writing against the specific vehicle before booking. Open Monday to Friday 8:30am–5:30pm — 0483 939 216. Vehicle pickup and drop-off may be available by prior arrangement, subject to location and availability.

What we do

Every service, every job —
done properly.

Manufacturer-spec intervals, dealer-level diagnostics and OEM-grade parts. Every service is quoted in writing against your VIN before work begins, with a clear, line-itemised breakdown.

  • 01

    DSG clutch & mechatronic data

Clutch adaptation values, mechatronic fault history and temperature data read on ODIS. Judder and delayed shifts have a data trail — we read it.

  • 02

    Timing chain tensioner (EA888)

Cold-start noise, correlation values and service evidence assessed to establish whether tensioner work is imminent.

  • 03

    Water pump, thermostat & coolant

Common EA888 wear items. Coolant loss evidence, pressure behaviour and housing condition checked on the hoist.

  • 04

    Intake carbon load

Borescope inspection on EA888 and EA211 ports so a walnut blast is a known, quoted item rather than a first-year surprise.

  • 05

    Haldex 4Motion service history

On Golf R and 4Motion models: Haldex pump filter and fluid service evidence, plus driveline behaviour under load.

  • 06

    Tune and hardware evidence

Flash-counter and hardware inspection to establish whether the car has been calibrated, and whether the supporting hardware was done properly.

Inspection packages

Two ways to know
before you buy.

Straightforward package pricing, confirmed in writing against the vehicle when you book. No surprises on the day.

Essential Inspection

Approx. 1 hour

$250

The fast, honest check before you commit — ideal for everyday European daily drivers where you want a specialist's eyes on the car before money changes hands.

  • OEM-level diagnostic scan across all modules — BMW ISTA, VAG ODIS, Mercedes XENTRY, Porsche PIWIS
  • On-hoist visual inspection of the running gear — leaks, physical damage, worn components
  • Road test to assess driving condition
  • Verbal summary on the spot — buy, negotiate or walk away

Comprehensive Inspection

Approx. 2 hours

$450

The full picture, documented. The one to book for performance cars, higher-kilometre buys and anything you'd negotiate hard on.

  • Everything in the Essential Inspection
  • Full multi-module OEM diagnostic scan with every stored fault logged
  • Video and photo inspection of the running gear — leaks, physical damage, wear, all documented
  • Road test under load — cold start, cruise, brakes, gearbox behaviour
  • Written report with photos, emailed the same business day
  • Clear buy, negotiate or walk-away recommendation you can hand to the seller
Optional extras — quoted with the vehicle
  • Compression test
  • Leak-down test
  • Borescope inspection of the cylinders
  • Spark plug condition check
  • Extended road test and in-depth drivability assessment
  • Deeper engine investigation where the initial inspection warrants it

Extras depend on the engine and how deep the inspection needs to go — tell us the make, model and year and we'll quote the exact combination in writing before anything is booked.

Why Apex

Dealer-grade work.
Without the dealer wait-list.

  • 01

    Volkswagen seen daily

Golf GTI, Golf R, Polo GTI, Tiguan, Passat, Amarok petrol and Škoda / CUPRA equivalents are routine work here, so the inspection targets this platform's known weak points instead of a generic checklist.

  • 02

VAG ODIS and VCDS module scan

Manufacturer-level software, every module read, faults mileage-stamped. A generic OBD reader shows a fraction of this.

  • 03

    Independent of the seller

We are not selling the car and have no relationship with the seller. The report says what is there.

  • 04

    Photographed evidence

Findings photographed on the hoist and in the ports, so you can negotiate with evidence rather than opinion.

  • 05

    Same business day report

Private sales move quickly. Drop-off in the morning, written report the same business day.

  • 06

    Independent, not dealer

The same tooling and the same standard of work, with everything approved in writing first.

  • 07

    Photos & written quotes

Every finding photographed on the hoist. Extras approved in writing before we touch anything.

Deep dive

What a proper European PPI actually covers.

A quick 'check-over' at the roadside is not a pre-purchase inspection. A proper PPI takes 60–90 minutes on the hoist, involves dealer-level diagnostic scanning, and produces a written, photographed report you can actually use. It's not a courtesy check — it's evidence.

The car goes on the hoist. Underbody, chassis, suspension, drivetrain, exhaust, cooling system, oil leaks, transmission pan, differential — everything you can't see from a driveway walkaround. We photograph anything of note.

The car goes on the diagnostic tester — ISTA, ODIS, Xentry or PIWIS depending on brand. Every module gets read. Stored faults, pending faults, cleared-code history where the tool exposes it. On some platforms we can also see service history from the module (odometer at last service, what was actually reset), which sometimes contradicts what the seller claims.

Then the road test — cold-start behaviour, gearshift quality across the range, cruise, braking, alignment, noise and vibration under load. Not a two-minute drive around the block. A real road test that stresses the drivetrain the way a real owner will.

Finally the report. Emailed same business day. Plain-English, photographed, honest. Written so you can hand it directly to the seller if you want to negotiate — evidenced findings, not vague opinion.

Platform-specific weak points we check.

European cars have known, model-specific weak points that a general PPI misses. We know what to look at, model by model — because we service these cars every day. Some examples:

  • BMW N54/N55

HPFP condition, walnut-blast history, oil filter housing gasket, electric water pump age, charge pipe condition.

  • BMW S55/S58

    Expansion tank cracks, charge pipe (S55), rod-bearing evidence on high-km S55 M2 Comp/M3/M4.

  • Audi EA888

Timing chain tensioner condition, water pump, DSG fluid history, walnut-blast history.

  • Audi 4.2 V8 FSI

Chain guide inspection, cam-follower wear, carbon buildup on high-km cars.

  • Mercedes M156

Cam-lobe wear inspection, head-bolt corrosion evidence.

  • Porsche 987 M97

IMS bearing type and evidence of wear, rear main seal, AOS condition.

  • VW DSG (all)

Fluid service history, clutch adaptation values on ODIS, temperature history.

  • Any AMG or M-car

Service history vs claimed km, fluids interval compliance, brake fluid age.

Questions

Common questions,
straight answers.

What should I check before buying a Golf R or GTI?+

DSG adaptation and fluid history, timing chain tensioner condition, water pump and coolant evidence, intake carbon load, Haldex service on 4Motion cars, and whether the car has been tuned. All of it is covered in the inspection.

Do you inspect Škoda and CUPRA too?+

Yes — they share the same EA888 and DSG architecture, so the same ODIS-based inspection applies.

Can the seller bring the car to you?+

Yes, and most agree. If a seller refuses an independent inspection, that is useful information in itself. Vehicle pickup and drop-off may be available by prior arrangement, subject to location and availability.

What do I actually receive?+

A written report with photographed findings, the full fault-memory read, road-test observations, and a plain recommendation on whether to proceed, negotiate or walk away. Each inspection is quoted in writing against the specific vehicle beforehand.

Do you inspect interstate purchases?+

We inspect any vehicle that can be brought to our Wantirna South workshop. For cars outside Victoria we can tell you exactly what to ask for, and inspect it on arrival before you commit to further spend.

Where are you located?+

Wantirna South, VIC 3152. Easy from EastLink, M1 and Melbourne's east. Call 0483 939 216 to book.
