Which Audi engines can develop intake carbon accumulation?+
Direct-injection Audi engines, because fuel is no longer sprayed across the intake valves. That includes EA113 2.0 TFSI, EA888 in all generations, the EA855 2.5 TFSI in RS3 and TT RS, the EA837 3.0 TFSI supercharged V6, and the 4.2 FSI V8 and 5.2 FSI V10. Accumulation rate depends on the engine, driving pattern and crankcase ventilation condition.
What symptoms may be associated with carbon accumulation?+
Rough or lumpy running for the first 20–30 seconds from cold, hesitation off idle, reduced throttle response, flat top-end on turbocharged engines, worsening fuel economy and intermittent cylinder-specific misfire codes. These symptoms are indicators, not confirmation.
Does a misfire automatically mean the engine needs carbon cleaning?+
No. A misfire can be caused by coils, spark plugs, injectors, crankcase ventilation faults, timing or compression issues. Carbon accumulation is one possible cause among several, so it has to be confirmed on the vehicle before cleaning is recommended.
How does Apex determine whether cleaning is appropriate?+
We review the model, engine family, kilometres, symptoms and service history, read every module on ODIS including live data, fuel trims and misfire counters, and inspect the intake ports with a borescope where access allows. Findings are documented and shown to you before any work is recommended.
What carbon-cleaning method is used?+
Walnut-shell media blasting with the intake manifold removed. Each port is individually sealed and blasted under continuous vacuum extraction, the crankcase ventilation and oil separator are inspected, and the engine is reassembled on new OEM gaskets to factory torque, then verified on ODIS and road tested.
Can findings be documented before work is approved?+
Yes. Borescope images, diagnostic findings and port photos are documented and sent to you, and every job is quoted in writing against your VIN with a line-itemised breakdown before work begins. Nothing additional proceeds without your approval.
How often does an Audi need a carbon clean?+
There is no fixed interval. It depends on driving pattern, engine family and crankcase ventilation condition. Short-trip city cars typically show symptoms between 80,000 and 120,000 km. We inspect first so the decision is based on your engine rather than a schedule.
Does a carbon clean help an Audi that is tuned?+
It can matter more on a calibrated car. Clean ports and stable fuel trims are what allow a calibration to behave the way it was developed to.

How long does it take?+
Most four-cylinder and inline-six engines are a single day in the workshop. V8s and harder-access engines run a day and a half. Drop off in the morning and we will confirm timing when we book it.
Will it affect my warranty?+
No. It is a maintenance procedure carried out to manufacturer specification with OEM gaskets and documented with photos, an inspection sheet and an itemised invoice, so your statutory rights stay intact.
Should plugs and coils be done at the same time?+
If they are anywhere near due, yes. The engine is already open to that level, so combining the work avoids paying for the same access twice.
