Audi Timing Chain · Melbourne

Audi timing chain replacement Melbourne.
Diagnosed properly before it is quoted.

Apex Performance Tuning is an independent European vehicle specialist workshop in Wantirna South. We are not a manufacturer and not an authorised dealership.

Cold-start rattle, P0016/P0017 cam correlation faults, timing deviation on ODIS. Timing-system requirements vary by engine family, build date, service history and measured condition — so we diagnose correlation values, stored faults, start-up noise and relevant live data before recommending repairs. EA113, EA888 chain-driven engines, Audi 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder and Audi V6/V8 applications all handled.

What we do

Every service, every job —
done properly.

Manufacturer-spec intervals, dealer-level diagnostics and OEM-grade parts. Every service is quoted in writing against your VIN before work begins, with a clear, line-itemised breakdown.

  • 01

    ODIS-supported diagnosis first

Cam correlation values, camshaft adjustment measurements and live data reviewed before anything is quoted — the tensioner, a cam adjuster or an oil-supply issue can produce the same symptoms as a worn chain.

  • 02

    EA113 applications

Australian 8P S3 and related EA113 2.0 TFSI engines use their own cam-drive and tensioner arrangement. Tensioner condition and cam-drive components are assessed on their own merits, not against EA888 assumptions.

  • 03

    EA888 chain-driven applications

Chain-driven EA888 engines (including 8V S3 and many A3/A4/A5/Q3/Q5 applications) have a distinct chain, tensioner and balance-shaft arrangement. Repairs are recommended on measured condition and correlation data.

  • 04

    Audi 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder

RS3 and TT RS models use Audi's 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder family — a different timing architecture again, with its own inspection and diagnostic approach.

  • 05

    Audi V6 and V8 applications

3.0 TFSI, 4.2 FSI and related V-engines use considerably different timing architecture, often with rear-of-engine chain access. Scope, access and labour are explained clearly before you commit.

  • 06

    OE-quality or updated-revision parts

Genuine Audi, or reputable OE-quality components in the latest available revision that meet the required specification. Post-repair scan, adaptations reset and correlation verified in live data.

Why Apex

Dealer-grade work.
Without the dealer wait-list.

  • 01

Engine family identified from your VIN

EA113, EA888, 2.5 TFSI and Audi V6/V8 engines are not interchangeable. We confirm the exact engine and build before discussing any timing work.

  • 02

Diagnosis before the whole job is quoted

Sometimes it is a tensioner, sometimes a chain, sometimes a cam adjuster or oil-supply fault. Correct diagnosis first — no full kit quoted when the measured evidence does not support it.

  • 03

    Written, line-itemised quote

Findings are photographed, explained and quoted in writing against your vehicle and VIN before work begins.

  • 04

    Independent, not dealer

The same tooling and the same standard of work, with everything approved in writing first.

  • 05

    Photos & written quotes

Every finding photographed on the hoist. Extras approved in writing before we touch anything.

Deep dive

Cold-start rattle — what it means.

A brief rattle on cold start-up in an EA113, EA888 or 4.2 V8 FSI Audi is one of the most reliable indicators of timing chain or tensioner wear. The tensioner uses oil pressure to keep the chain tight; when oil pressure drops overnight, a worn tensioner allows a moment of chain slack — which rattles until pressure builds. Ignoring it is how catastrophic engine failures happen.

The correct next step is diagnostic, not immediate replacement. ODIS live-data on cam correlation, camshaft adjustment measurements, and (where practical) a physical inspection of the tensioner tell us what's actually worn. Sometimes it's just the tensioner — a contained job. Sometimes it's the chain and guides — meaningfully more work.

Platform-specific replacement scope.

Not all timing chain jobs are equal. The scope and complexity vary enormously by engine:

  • EA113 2.0 TFSI

8P S3, older Golf GTI/R. Tensioner is the primary fault — updated revision available. Chain replacement is optional and often unnecessary on lower-km cars.

  • EA888 gen2

8P S3, TT, early A4/A5. Both chain and tensioner benefit from proactive replacement around 100–150k km with updated parts.

  • EA888 gen3

8V S3, RS3, Mk7 Golf R. Similar to gen2 but with a revised tensioner design. Interval is longer but not indefinite.

  • 4.2 V8 FSI (B7/B8 RS4/RS5)

Engine-out job. Chain guides on the back of the engine — no shortcut. Updated-spec guides fitted. A significant job, and quoted in writing against your VIN before it is booked.

  • 3.0 TFSI (B8 supercharged)

Uses a chain-driven cam and separate supercharger drive. Chain itself is robust; the supercharger clutch is the more common wear item.

  • 2.9 TFSI biturbo (B9)

Modern architecture, relatively young engines — not yet a common failure point but on the radar.

Questions

Common questions,
straight answers.

My Audi has cold-start rattle — is it the timing chain?+

Not necessarily. Tensioner condition, cam adjusters and oil supply can all produce similar noise. We measure correlation values and review live data on ODIS before recommending repairs.

At what kilometres should an Audi timing chain be replaced?+

There is no universal interval. Timing-system requirements vary by engine family, build date, service history and measured condition — which is why we diagnose first rather than replace on kilometres alone.

How much is a timing chain job?+

It varies enormously between a tensioner-only repair, a full chain kit and a V-engine job with rear-of-engine access. Send your registration or VIN and we provide a written, line-itemised quote after inspection.

Which engine does my Audi have?+

We confirm it from your VIN. As examples, Australian 8P S3 models used EA113-family 2.0 TFSI engines, while RS3 models use Audi's 2.5 TFSI five-cylinder — each with different timing components.

Where are you located?+

Wantirna South, VIC 3152. Easy from EastLink, M1 and Melbourne's east. Call 0483 939 216 to book.
