Inside the VW Golf GTI.
The Mk7 GTI (EA888 gen3) is arguably the sweet spot in the GTI lineage — refined, responsive, and extremely tuneable. Stage 1 on 98 octane returns 60–90 hp on stock hardware; Stage 2 with downpipe and intake pushes closer to 350 hp with correct calibration. The DQ250 wet DSG (early Mk7) or DQ381 (Mk7.5 and Golf R) both need fluid on 60k km intervals — non-negotiable.
The Mk8 GTI (EA888 evo4) is a further refinement with Miller-cycle valvetrain. More sensitive to fuel quality and spark plug condition; less sensitive to bad tuning because the ECU actively fights you. We calibrate to actual hardware and log under load — same standard as any other tune.
Weak points to know across all GTI generations: gen3 water pump (100k km, updated part), spark plug and coil intervals (respect them), diverter valve (older Mk7 — updated part available), and DSG fluid. The engine itself is robust; skipped maintenance is what kills it.
