Apex Performance Tuning Melbourne — European and performance car workshop
Mercedes-AMG engine bay open for intake carbon cleaning at Apex Wantirna South
Mercedes-Benz Carbon Clean & Walnut Blasting · Melbourne

Mercedes-Benz carbon clean & walnut blasting Melbourne.
Intake valves back to clean metal.

Apex Performance Tuning is an independent European vehicle specialist workshop in Wantirna South. We are not a manufacturer and not an authorised dealership.

Mercedes-Benz direct-injection engines never wash fuel over the intake valves, so carbon builds up as a hard crust — rough cold start, throttle hesitation, misfire codes and fuel economy that quietly slides. We remove the manifold, seal each port, blast with walnut shell media under vacuum extraction, inspect the crankcase ventilation system, and verify the result on Mercedes XENTRY. M271 CGI, M270, M274, M264, M276, M278, M157, M177, M178, M133 and M139 all handled in Wantirna South.

Quick answer

Apex Performance Tuning carries out Mercedes-Benz walnut-shell blasting and intake carbon cleaning at Unit 4/6 Woodbine Court, Wantirna South VIC 3152. We are an independent specialist workshop, not a dealership.

The intake manifold is removed, each port is individually sealed and blasted with walnut shell media under continuous vacuum extraction, the PCV and oil separator are inspected, and the engine is reassembled on new OEM gaskets to factory torque and verified on Mercedes XENTRY.

Most four-cylinder and inline-six engines are a full day; V8s and harder-access engines can run a day and a half. Every job is quoted in writing against your VIN before work begins. Monday to Friday 8:30am–5:30pm — 0483 939 216.

What we do

Every service, every job —
done properly.

Manufacturer-spec intervals, dealer-level diagnostics and OEM-grade parts. Every service is quoted in writing against your VIN before work begins, with a clear, line-itemised breakdown.

  • 01

    Borescope inspection first

We borescope the intake ports before anything comes apart, so you can see the actual carbon load on your Mercedes-Benz and whether the job is warranted yet.

  • 02

    Manifold off, ports sealed

Intake manifold removed, each port individually sealed, injectors, coils and manifold flaps inspected while access is open.

  • 03

    Walnut shell blasting under vacuum

Crushed walnut shell is abrasive to carbon but safe on aluminium heads and valve faces, with continuous vacuum extraction so nothing reaches a cylinder.

  • 04

    Ports verified after blasting

Re-inspected to confirm the valve faces and seats are back to clean metal — photographed so you can see it.

  • 05

    PCV & oil separator inspection

The usual root cause of rapid carbon return. Inspected and quoted while apart so the deposits do not simply come straight back.

  • 06

    Verified on Mercedes XENTRY

Cold-start behaviour, fuel trims, idle quality and misfire counters checked in live data on Mercedes XENTRY, then road tested before it goes home.

Why Apex

Dealer-grade work.
Without the dealer wait-list.

  • 01

    Mercedes-Benz intake work weekly

    M271 CGI, M270, M274, M264, M276, M278, M157, M177, M178, M133 and M139 — correct media, correct procedure, correct torque specifications.

  • 02

    Evidence before and after

Borescope images before, port photos after. You see exactly what the job achieved.

  • 03

    No chemical-soak shortcuts

Spray-in cleaners cannot remove hard baked deposits from intake valves. Media blasting is the only method that genuinely cleans them.

  • 04

    Root cause addressed

Crankcase ventilation, turbo seals and injector condition checked, because those determine how fast the carbon returns.

  • 05

    Independent, quoted in writing

Dealer-level tooling and procedure with a written, line-itemised quote against your VIN before any work starts.

  • 06

    Independent, not dealer

The same tooling and the same standard of work, with everything approved in writing first.

  • 07

    Photos & written quotes

Every finding photographed on the hoist. Extras approved in writing before we touch anything.

Deep dive

Mercedes-Benz engines we carbon clean

These are the Mercedes-Benz direct-injection families we handle most often in Melbourne's east. Access and procedure differ between them, so every car is borescoped and quoted individually rather than priced off a generic list.

  • M271 CGI

C-Class and E-Class four-cylinder CGI. Early Mercedes direct injection with typically heavy intake deposits.

  • M270 / M274 / M264

    A-Class, CLA, GLA, C-Class and E-Class four-cylinder turbo petrol.

  • M276 V6

V6 petrol C, E, S, GLC and GLE models. Manifold-off access, both banks verified.

  • M278 / M157 V8 biturbo

S-Class, CLS, E63 and ML63. Hot-V access makes this a longer booking, quoted accordingly.

  • M177 / M178

C63 (W205), E63 (W213), AMG GT and GLC63. Intake work usually combined with plugs while access is open.

  • M133 / M139 AMG four-cylinder

A45, A45 S, CLA45 and GLA45. High-output engines where clean ports and stable trims matter most.

The symptoms owners actually notice

Carbon buildup creeps rather than fails. Owners typically describe a lumpy first 20–30 seconds after a cold start, a soft hesitation off idle in traffic, fuel economy that has quietly slipped over years, and occasional cylinder-specific misfire codes that come and go with weather and fuel.

On turbocharged engines the last third of the rev range goes flat, because restricted intake ports cost airflow exactly where you notice it. None of that is proof on its own, which is why we scan and borescope before recommending the job.

Send us your rego or VIN and current symptoms and we will confirm the correct procedure for your engine, then quote it in writing before anything is booked. Vehicle pickup and drop-off may be available by prior arrangement, subject to location and availability.

Questions

Common questions,
straight answers.

Do Mercedes engines carbon up as badly as BMW?+

Some do. M271 CGI and the four-cylinder turbo families build meaningful intake deposits, while AMG V8s vary by generation. We borescope first so you only pay for the job if the engine warrants it.

Can you carbon clean an AMG V8?+

Yes. Hot-V access on M157, M177 and M178 makes it a longer job than an inline engine, and it is quoted in writing against your VIN before work begins.

How long does it take?+

Most four-cylinder and inline-six engines are a single day in the workshop. V8s and harder-access engines run a day and a half. Drop off in the morning and we will confirm timing when we book it.

Will it affect my warranty?+

No. It is a maintenance procedure carried out to manufacturer specification with OEM gaskets and documented with photos, an inspection sheet and an itemised invoice, so your statutory rights stay intact.

Should plugs and coils be done at the same time?+

If they are anywhere near due, yes. The engine is already open to that level, so combining the work avoids paying for the same access twice.

Where are you located?+

Wantirna South, VIC 3152. Easy from EastLink, M1 and Melbourne's east. Call 0483 939 216 to book.
