Inside the Mercedes-AMG A45.
The W176 A45 launched M133 — a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder making up to 280 kW. The W177 A45 S evolved that into M139, the world's most powerful production 4-cylinder at 310 kW. Both engines are essentially motorsport-adjacent hardware in a hatchback — which means the maintenance profile is closer to a race car than a typical hot hatch.
Cooling is stressed. Turbo works near its limits. AMG Speedshift DCT needs fluid on interval — not 'lifetime'. Coolant on interval, brake fluid every 2 years, expansion tank inspection every service. Skipping any of these on a M139 is a hospital-grade mistake.
Stage 1 flash on M139 pushes the A45 S past 480 hp on stock hardware with correct calibration. Downpipe and intercooler upgrades open the door to more, but the engine's stock cooling is the limit — not the tune. We calibrate to real hardware, log under load, and back up every file.
