Inside the BMW 335i / 340i.
The E90/E92 335i introduced the N54 twin-turbo inline-six — the engine that made BMW tuning what it is today. Enormous headroom on stock internals (600+ hp is possible on port-injection retrofits), a well-understood HPFP and injector story, and walnut-blast intervals that are non-negotiable around 80–120k km. A well-maintained N54 is one of the great engines. A neglected N54 is a warning tale.
The F30 335i switched to N55 — single-turbo, cleaner emissions, and a plastic charge pipe that fails predictably. We fit aluminium as a preventive job. F30 340i introduced B58 — arguably the best mass-produced petrol engine of the last decade. Cooling and ZF 8HP fluid discipline is the whole story.
The G20 340i continues B58 with further updates. Same maintenance profile — respect the ZF 8HP fluid interval, keep the cooling healthy, and the platform will run to 300k km without drama. Stage 1 flash on any of these three engines is transformative and safe when calibrated properly on 98 or E-blend.
