Inside the BMW M5.
The F10 M5 introduced the S63TU — twin-turbo 4.4 V8 with hot-V turbo placement. It also introduced a specific rod-bearing wear pattern on early cars that's well-documented and worth checking on high-km examples. We inspect, photograph, and quote openly — rebuild is expensive but doable if caught before catastrophic failure.
The F90 M5 Competition uses the S63B44T4 — same base but heavily revised, with a healthier bottom end and ZF 8HP eight-speed replacing the M-DCT of the F10. Stage 1 flash tuning pushes the car well beyond 700 hp on stock hardware with correct calibration on 98 or E-blend. Warranty is a real conversation — we tell you honestly what a dealer will detect.
S63 cooling is hard-worked in all generations. Expansion tank, coolant hoses, thermostat housing — all inspected every service. Small preventive jobs are materially cheaper than roadside failures on a car this heavy.
