DSG anatomy — what actually wears.
A DSG (Direct-Shift Gearbox) is a dual-clutch automated manual. Two clutch packs — one for odd gears, one for even — pre-select the next ratio so the shift is near-instant. The mechatronic unit is the brain: hydraulic control block, electronic control unit and pressure sensors all integrated. When people say 'my DSG failed', they usually mean one of three things: fluid degradation, clutch pack wear, or mechatronic fault.
The good news: two of those three are cheap fixes if caught early. The third — mechatronic failure — is expensive but often avoidable by servicing correctly on interval. The vast majority of DSG failures we see in the workshop trace back to skipped or incorrect fluid services.
DQ250 (wet, 6-speed)
Golf GTI, Golf R Mk6/Mk7, S3 8P, some Skoda/Cupra. VW spec G052182 fluid, 60k km.
DQ381 (wet, 7-speed)
Golf R Mk7.5/Mk8, S3 8V/8Y, TT RS. Uprated for higher torque — same 60k km fluid interval.
DQ500 (wet, 7-speed)
TT RS, Amarok, some Audi/VW commercial applications. Heavy-duty wet DSG.
DQ200 (dry, 7-speed)
Lower-torque VAG applications. Dry-clutch design — different failure modes, different service approach.
DL501 (S tronic, longitudinal)
Audi A4/A5/S4/S5/RS4/RS5 B8 — 7-speed wet dual clutch. Fluid and filter every 60–80k km.
S tronic 7-speed (transverse)
Same base as DQ381 branded differently in Audi cars.
